There are charities around the world that help families in their communities. They are there to support those that live in poverty. They help by providing food, medicine, and education.
Check if an organization is legit
Check if the organization is registered and whether it is compliant with the IRS (Internal Revenue Service). This is to verify that the charity or organization you wish to donate to is listed as 501(C) (3).
This is the correct tax-exempt status for a non-profit charity and means you can deduct your donation from your taxes. This status means the organization, according to the IRS, may not be an action organization. It may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities. It may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates.
If the charity you are considering is involved in any of these activities, they are operating as a legit 501 (c) (3) charity organization.
Do Research on the Organization you want to Donate
One of your best ways to check an organization is to do a Google search. Enter the type of charity you wish to donate to and see what comes up. It could be something like homeless shelters or disaster relief. Include additional search criteria such as ‘in my local area’. Find the best rated and highly recommended, or top-rated Non-profit Organizations.
Once you have found a charity you’re interested in, type in the name of the organization along with other search criteria. Separate searches for each additional word that you can add to the organizer’s name, such as reviews, ratings, complaints, lawsuits, investigations, scandals, scams, or even arrested.
Remember these one-word additions tacked on to your search will quickly reveal anything you should know about the organization you wish to donate to. You may find nothing negative and can decide before giving the charity your money.
